On August 15th, 1995, Paul Bernardo took the stand to defend himself against two first degree murder charges. It was the first time he would explain publically what happened to 14 year old Leslie Mahaffy and 15 year old Kristen French. Spectators lined up all night to get a seat inside the courtroom.
Before Bernardo took the stand his defence lawyer John Rosen made a short opening statement telling the jury the only issue to be determined was who actually killed Leslie and Kristen.
Bernardo turned up his charm when he took the stand and had a quick answer for everything. He immediately admitted to kidnapping and assaulting the girls but said he did not strangle them. The families of Leslie and Kristen got up and walked out of court before Bernardo’s testimony began.
The Crown spent several days cross-examining Bernardo and by the final day Bernardo’s confidence seemed to disappear. He went from animated and outgoing to withdrawn and closed off overnight.
When Bernardo was finished on the stand the Defence rested its case ending the evidence portion of the trial.
