On June 15th, 1995, the Crown’s star witness took the stand to testify against Paul Bernardo at his murder trial. His ex-wife Karla Homolka would spend 17 days on the stand. She testified about her abusive relationship with Bernardo and described how Bernardo alone killed both Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French.
Two weeks after Leslie was murdered Bernardo and Homolka were married in a fairy tale wedding in the quaint tourist town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, complete with a horse-drawn carriage. Homolka testified that they didn’t love each other anymore by the time of the wedding.
Homolka said she finally left Bernardo after he severely beat her with a flashlight and held a knife to her neck during sex. Homolka was worried she would be Bernardo’s next victim. A photo taken of Homolka after the beating was leaked to the media during the trial which infuriated defence Lawyer John Rosen.
When Defence Lawyer John Rosen cross-examined Homolka sparks were flying. He accused Homolka of killing the girls on her own while Bernardo was out of the house.
